The Problem with Vanadium

Vanadium is a very well known problem in boilers and furnaces. Vanadium combines with oxygen in the combustion process and creates pentavanadate droplets which melt at 300 to 500 degrees Celsius. These droplets are accelerated though the atomization process and collide with the cooler interior surfaces of the boilers. Over time these pentavanadate droplets accumulate and form a hard crust in the interior of the equipment. Companies typically spend a significant amount of downtime cleaning injectors and the interior of boilers to break away hard pentavanadate crusts with heavy equipment.
